Scaffo-Park

Scaffo park aims to provide an affordable, sustainable solution to cycle parking for the Bankside area. The Scaffo-Park idea can be explained by talking about its 3 main elements:

Scaffolding

The brief asked for ‘practical and affordable’ designs and for a ‘modular, portable and secure’ parking system. What could be more practical and affordable than using a pre-existing structural system? One which was inherently modular, portable and being made of heavy steel rods, provided the material properties necessary for a secure parking solution. Using recycled or reclaimed scaffolding also gave us the opportunity for a low-carbon footprint solution.

 Greenery

If scaffolding was ugly then nature would provide the beauty. Climbing plants weaving in and out of a randomized trellis mesh would provide changing visual interest all year round. An artistic structure in an artistic area, lending identity and character to previously anonymous spaces. The climbing plants would be ecologically friendly too, providing island habitats for insects and birds, as well as being sustainable and low cost. A free, organic wrap to our reclaimed scaffold frame. A fitting addition to the Bankside Urban Forest?

Secure Locking

Cycle stands in London come in many shapes and sizes. Many of them are not practical for cycle parking as they do not enable the user to easily use a D-lock to secure both the frame and back wheel to the structure. The aim of our cycle stand was to allow the user multiple, convenient options for cycle locking using either the front or back wheel and the option of being able to lock both the front/back wheel and the frame to the stand using a single D-lock. Furthermore the aim was to achieve this at the same time as avoiding the heftiness of similar existing solutions such as the Sheffield stand.
